MoreElizabeth Durbin, the matriarch of the Durbin Farms, was left financially broke after her husband Orville, was murdered by the Klu Klux in 1916. She tried invain to get financial help from her husbands friends and business associates, who refused her request, in hopes of buying these farms for pennies on the dollar.

Determined to gain that earlier wealth that goes back four generations, Elizabeth uses her ingenuity and wits to eventually become not only the wealthiest woman in Kaneyville, but the state of Kentucky. However, while working towards regaining the families wealth, she makes one major mistake by placing an older Negro ,over her only child Sara Gail, for protection while growing up. By the time Elizabeth realizes her mistake, she is dying from heart disease and her daughter is eighteen, and in love with her protector, Johnny Amos. Elizabeth coerces Sara Gail into going off to college in hopes that this childish forbidden love will eventually dissipate, and save the one person she loves most in this world from a life of hostility, rage and hate that will threaten not only Saras life but her future children and the Durbin Dynasty as well.
